Info

Ebbon ran €20 billion of vehicle purchases a year through one platform, for 22+ manufacturers and 7,500+ dealers across Europe. Their Leaselink platform worked, but couldn't keep pace with what customers needed: simple travel-card orders sat in the same rigid system as complex fleet configurations. We worked out how to make it flex to each customer rather than force them all through one rigid system, then designed it, modular by design.

Challenge

For the new platform to meet the demands of modern automotive procurement, flexibility was everything. The platform needed to handle unprecedented variety, from simple purchases like travel cards through to complex fleet configurations.

In effect, there would be no ‘standard UI’ – any two customers and any end user might experience completely different pages and user flows. More complex still, the platform had to cater for three primary audiences: the client customer, the end user and the Ebbon product specialist onboarding the client.

Our analysis

No fixed set of templates could serve this range of use cases. The decision that shaped everything was to build from modular parts rather than finished pages, so components could be assembled in any configuration while staying visually and functionally coherent.

Think Lego rather than a catalogue of finished models: the same set of parts could handle everything from a simple card purchase to a multi-step fleet specification, for all three audiences.

What we did

01.

Building a strategic foundation and brand in six weeks

We established the strategic direction for the rebuild in a six-week product accelerator: stakeholder interviews, information architecture, and core customer journey mapping. The brand and identity for the new product, Orca, came out of that same sprint.

02.

Designing components that work like Lego

We developed a design system covering 80% of anticipated use cases, to build and rebuild components like Lego for infinite customisation whilst maintaining consistency across both mobile and desktop experiences.

03.

Adding workflow and configuration tools

A second accelerator concentrated on operational functionality, adding workflow management, back-office configuration, and a task-based interface redesign, working closely with the development team.

Embedding a specialist to keep it moving

We embedded one of our senior specialists in the team to take the accelerators' output into day-to-day operations: extending the platform, creating new components, and building the marketing assets that supported early sales. As the team took on each area, they gained the capability to keep evolving Orca themselves.
