UK telematics apps: what 21,994 app-store reviews show
Date
Scope
Telematics apps, insurance and fleet
Overview
A study of 21,994 UK app-store reviews across 19 telematics operators in consumer insurance and fleet. Telematics apps judge their users as well as serve them. What an app records can set a young driver's premium, decide whether cover continues and feed the record of a professional driver's working hours. We found that the most consequential friction sits around that judgement, even though the largest volume of complaints is about getting into the app at all. The report sets out the four pillars that customer trust in a driving record rests on and scores the user needs operators leave most underserved. It closes with ten questions senior leadership can put to its product team.

Key findings
At the major consumer insurers, store headline ratings say 4.5 and recent written reviews say 2. Across operators with enough reviews to compare, the store rating sits a median 2.2 stars above what customers write.
Getting into the app is the biggest complaint. Login and reliability problems are the largest category in the written record, and four in five reviews raising a login problem are one-star.
When the app misses data, customers describe getting the blame, from warnings for "not providing data" up to threatened cancellation. Across 10,442 reviews we found only two describing a successful challenge.
All twelve user Jobs-to-be-Done with enough evidence to confirm are underserved, three of them highly. The report ends with ten questions for senior leadership to put to its product team.
