Overview

This report reviews the companion apps carmakers wrap around the vehicle itself, drawing on around 780,000 public reviews across ten major manufacturers, with a 2,600-review qualitative sample. The average rating of 3.9 out of 5 masked wide variation between brands, and the EV specialists did not lead. Connectivity, synchronisation and cluttered interfaces were the recurring complaints, and most Jobs-to-be-Done were at least partially underserved.

Key findings

  • Average rating 3.9 out of 5, but ranging from BMW at 4.8 to MG at 2.1.

  • EV-only brands such as Tesla and Polestar sit in the lower half; EV focus does not guarantee a better app.

  • Connectivity and synchronisation failures are the single biggest pain point across every brand.

  • Around 780,000 reviews analysed (2,600-review qualitative sample) with a large language model and human QA; correct as of September 2024.
